I need More than Star Wars
Image via WikipeI feel like a heretic even thinking this, much less posting it, but I just can't hold it in anymore!
I need MORE scifi on TV than Star Wars: The Clone Wars!
That's a bit better. Just saying it helps me out, but I am not sure exactly what to do about it.
I am a Space Opera junkie
Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, SG-U, Babylon 5, Firefly, Space Above and Beyond, Lexx, Star Hunter... I even watched Battlestar Gallactica even though I never really fell in love with it.
I love a heroic group on a space ship going out on adventures and facing amazing odds. I just do. I grew up on them. They are like crack to me.
They are not cheap to make, and difficult to make well... and the conventional wisdom is that people will only watch Star Trek and Star Wars. That is a lie, but recent history doesn't help.
Defying Gravity was just recently canceled, and I am sure it will reinforce the conventional wisdom, but it shouldn't.
Defying Gravity's Sins
It took place in a world too close to ours and didn't differentiate itself well.
It tried too hard to be a drama, and fell into the melodrama trap.
The mystery behind the scenes felt forced.
The main character was a joke, and extremely unlikable.
The few moments of golden content highlight the crappy nature of the rest.
It felt like watching a show in a library. It was so quiet and muted that you felt like you needed to keep silent or someone would shush you.
The plot was too amorphous.
The characters were wooden stereotypes.
The camera work was sub-par.
At the end of every episode you just felt like, "Well, that just happened... What was it?"
It was a flawed show that could have been retooled into a good one, but it was not given a chance.
My real problem
I have been working on a fantasy novel that I really like, but with the dearth of space opera to watch or read, I really want to write another Space Opera...
Ugh... I suppose that is why I got into writing originally, to entertain myself, but I feel like I am being drawn back into it.
There may be a way out, but it would be a lot of work for me. Should I do a Space Opera for the site and a fantasy novel for the Publishers?
I have struggled with whether my next book should go out to a traditional publisher or if I should put it out myself. This path would allow me to test both models and to see which works better. On the other hand I would be writing a Space Opera series and a Fantasy novel at the same time.
Help me dashPunks, you are my only hope!
I would love some feedback on this. Shows to distract me, or votes for the plan I just explained. What do you think?
