Review of: Legend of the Seeker 119 Cursed

Overall Rating: 9

When a king is transformed into a vicious beast to keep Darken Rahl's D'Haran soldiers at bay, he seeks Richard's help after he begins to murder his own people. Watch the episode streaming online above.

"Cursed" is another well done episode but it lacked some of the rich details I have grown accustomed to in previous episodes. For instance in "Bounty" they were able to give us good background information on the Shadrin throughout the episode. There are many instances where I wished they would have taken a moment to give us the details like why are the D'harens are taught to fear the Calthrop.

I love how in this series they keep mixing up the basic style behind each episode, for instance "Cursed" is a horror style episode. They even maintain good supernatural horror by showing us enough but allowing our minds to fill in a lot of the unknowns. This changing style from episode to episode has kept me on my toes, allowing the show to stay fresh avoiding ruts and preventing me from growing bored with the series.

"Cursed" puts forth a theme which is derived from the name of the episode: One persons curse is another's gift. What should a person do about the demon inside? If one would run and hide, denying those powers, they would put everyone around them in danger. Zed puts forth the answer with the statement power is not power if not controlled. The solution is one must embrace their powers, recognize those powers are part of who they are, and learn how to control it. How did you feel about Kahlan’s initial response to the situation?

What do you think Zed meant by the statement “It is the very reason why we must defeat Darken Rahl." when he was talking abut ultimate power? We know Rahl is a problem to all peoples of the land. We know he is seeking for ultimate control. Is the answer so obvious and simple: Rahl is a danger because he wants ultimate power and would use it unchecked and therefore must be defeated before he gets it or is there something more to the situation?

  • The Calthrop:

    • how they took the werewolf to the next level instead of just on the full moon it’s every night

    • looks sort of like the lycan, vampire hybrid Michel from underworld.

    • the teeth

    • how the curse passed down to whoever sat on the throne

  • the costumes are very well done

  • the music was very evocative and fit the scenes well.

  • They followed the good tenants of supernatural horror and showed just enough leaving the rest up to the imagination

  • how they did the vision sequence, I found it dramatic thinking how would they get around the seeker without hands.

  • Zed was great

  • Con Dar!!!!

  • I love how the silly guards think that Kahlan’s only attack is her confession ability

  • The mythology in the scene between Zed and Shota using magic.

Dislikes / Concerns

  • concern that some will feel cheated over the vision sequence.

  • concern some will feel that it was not in Zed’s character to forgetting the better anchoring with the unbreakable chains

  • one too many Deus ex Machina moments

  • a lot of opportunities for good back story but did not deliver anything of substance

  • “Maybe this is a gift, one you should not deny. It’s a part of who you are.”

  • “Ultimate power must not go unchecked. We would become monsters. It is the very reason why we must defeat Darken Rahl.”
