Innocents of Ryloth is the second of the three episode storyline covering the battles of Ryloth. Previously on Storm Over Ryloth we got to see Anakin and Ahsoka break through the blockade over the planet. Now the clone army needs to land and take back the planet but before they can land they need to take out a powerful Separatist weapon. Obi-Wan and a small clone force enter an occupied town to take out the weapon and discover that its residents are being used as a living shield.
The opening line is “The costs of war can never be truly accounted.” This theme is really only lightly covered in the episode and mainly only with the droid commander and it’s presumptions. They do take a nice point in the middle of the story to address the costs that the civilians have to pay with Boil and Waxer’s conversation as they are scouting the city and when pondering what to do about the Twi’lek girl. I was left wishing there would have been more exploring that subject.
I was disappointed by the racist comment the clones make regarding the Twi’lek people. The comment is a one off and is just left out there with out any kind of attempt to show it as being bad or unacceptable. This bothered me because it subtly shows acceptance for racist behavior and thinking. It was also a lost opportunity especially for Star Wars to not subtly teach cultural acceptance which is a running lesson for the franchise.
I’m still really enjoying the Clone Wars series but it isn’t as satisfying as the other Star Wars media. I wonder if it is because they are targeting the show towards kids and are dummying down and toning down the episodes and material covered. I think part of it is that I don’t feel that the story of the clone wars is not being covered as an overall story and I’m only being feed episodic, disjointed snapshots of events in the war.
What did you think about the ending? Was it too Deus Ex Machina? Did the droid act in a manner unlike how droids should act?
Did you notice the racist comment made by the clone troops? I wonder sometimes if the subtle contempt that the Jedi and the Clone army has over the citizens of the republic is hurting the war effort? How did the comment make you feel?
