The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is everything one could expect and hope for in a Mummy movie! This was a fun, thrilling, adventure tale that takes us around the world. They maintain the brilliant sense of humor that is in the previous mummy movies. I was pleased to see a movie with really nice looking animation that was not done by ILM, it gives me hope for the future of animation effects and characters.
Earlier in the day before we watched the movie I was joking about a possible way as to how they would resolve Rachel Weisz not coming back to play Eve. I put forth the idea that maybe Rick would have to explain to Alex that his mommy would not be joining them on their adventure this time because she had discovered a new book store in Diagon Alley and would not come home. We all had a good laugh until the movie started and I sat paralyzed in my seat as we see Eve in a book store doing a reading of her Mummy book. She is asked if she is the same character as in the book and answers "I can assure you I am an entirely different person." This was a nice tie in to reality and really helped to ease the audience into the story. Maria Bello did a good job with the character of Eve and thankfully they did not relegate eve to a small roll to try to cover up the actress change. I also enjoyed that eve retains her combat prowess that she obtained in The Mummy Returns.
The chemistry amongst the O'Connell family is believable and compelling. The moments between Rick and his son Alex are touching and hilarious. They take an appropriately short amount of time to fill in the audience with what the family did in the time between the end of The Mummy Returns and the beginning of this adventure.
The acting was good but has some week points and the same goes for the writing. That being said it's a Mummy Movie and an adventure tale the expectation should be weighted on the action sequences and the adventure. This movie hit those notes perfectly! A must see in the theaters and definitely an owner to put on the shelf next to my other Mummy movies.
The Plot / Story: The ruthless Dragon Emperor (Jet Li) and his 10,000 warriors are double crossed by a sorceress (Michelle Yeoh). Trapped in suspended animation and forgotten for eons until Alex O’Connell (Luke Ford) gets tricked into awakening them. Alex then turns to the only people who knows a lot about stopping the undead: his father Rick O’Connell’s (Brendan Fraser), mother Evelyn (Maria Bello) and Evelyn’s brother Jonathan (John Hannah).
Rick must combat the resurrected Han Emperor to stop his quest for world domination. As they engage in a race from the catacombs of ancient china into the frigid Himalayas.
