SF News Bites: Avengers, Transformers 3, Conan The Barbarian and Mortal Kombat
Producer Kevin Feige confirms the main characters in the Avengers movie. "It’s three people – four including the Hulk; five including Nick Fury – who you’ve seen before in other movies, coming together for the very first time.” I can only hope that this movie is as good as Ultimate Avengers animated movie. In the works as expected. Currently Michael Bay is moving along with the script and scouting locations for Transformers 3: Chicago, Detroit, and Washington D.C. I really enjoyed the first two Transformers movies my main concern is in the script. (via SCI FI Wire)
Conan the Barbarian
Jason Momoa has been cast as the New Conan The Barbarian. I'm excited with that pick. Jason's a great guy, talented actor and can physically fill the role of Conan. Most are familiar with him playing as Ronon Dex from Stargate: Atlantis (via /Film)
A Mortal Kombat redo is in the works, they have selected a writer Oren Uziel. The hope at /Film is that he will bring more depth to the Mortal Kombat movies then the previous films. I like the idea of adding more story depth to the Mortal Kombat movies but that can not be at the cost of loosing what made the series so great. They are so much fun to watch.
Will Aliens Be the New Vampires?
With the success of recent films like the Transformers movies and District 9 (and to a lesser extent, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which is the 26th highest grossing film worldwide), it seems like Hollywood is going alien crazy, giving the green light and putting a lot of alien-based stories in development — more than ever before. In a couple years, will aliens be the new vampires? -(via /Film)
Will Aliens be the New Vampires?
No, the rise in interest in alien movies is just part of the Hollywood system. The very same system that will also decide people aren’t interested in Aliens as much as Vampire’s.
Hollywood has a past track record for starting many projects to hedge their bet on what the next big fad will be. Many of these projects get dumped or shelved after the sales numbers come in.
The sales numbers are not so good for alien movies. Transformers and Indiana Jones are franchises in their own right and won’t be thought of by the studios as alien movies.
There are also a lot of superhero movie projects in the works. Could the superhero movie be the next thing? With such a diverse story and setting potential there is a lot more that could be explored in this area on the big screen.
Vampire movies are still bringing in a lot for the studios. Do you think they will continue doing more of them? I hope not, it pains me to say that but with so many bad ones out there I would like for it to be given a rest.
What would you like to see as the next movie phase?
The Avengers Program Who Will Make The Cut
The rumblings of a special team being put together has received some new light recently. With mixed results from the super soldier program Marvel sheds some more light on their Avenger project. They really proved their capabilities to handle this project with Iron Man and The Hulk. So now we are left wondering who will be in the avenger movie? The lineup has changed some as they are working on the individual film but Favreau tells us that "The ones Marvel is talking about now are Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and Iron Man."
He left out Nick Fury, I hope it is only a slip up because Samuel Jackson was awesome as Nick Fury in the cut scene after the credits in Iron Man. He didn't get to show up in Hulk other than in name. Then again I don't expect him to have his own movie but I hope to see him have some cameo roles in the future films.
Iron Man was in theaters in May
Hulk just came out in theaters
Thor is scheduled for June 4 2010
Ant-Man doesn't have a time set yet for the film but he could be placed into the Iron Man 2 film scheduled for April 30 2010.
The First Avenger: Captain America: May 6 2011
It's all still a ways off so we will have to see what changes between now and then. One of my concerns is how much will the Avengers movie cost if they have a full cast of headlining actors & actresses? This could be the limiting factor on any Avenger movie where they will have to do something either getting them to share more of the cut of the film or to have a smaller number of superheros in any given film. I found it interesting when Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios' president of production, put forth the idea of "heroes can cross into each other's adventures and occasionally team up if there's a foe too great for any one of them to handle." This could be a way to have Avengers films with out having to have more then a few headliners in any one film and to maintain a sense of setting consistency.
I applaud Marvel Studios for taking on such a large project in a fan friendly manner and for not trying to cut corners. I do not envy them for having to make some very hard choices regarding how to fit in a ton of superheros into an avenger film which is what I would love to see yet staying within budget for talent costs and to have enough money left over to make sure that the effects look great. Good luck, and God speed, I eagerly await the next project.

Exploring The Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor
August 1st is fast approaching and so is the release date of the next Mummy movie, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The promotion begins with the release of the America is the teaser poster. This looks really good and Rob will be happy to know that it does stimulates my imagination.
On Wednesday at midnight they relaunched the production site design adding new photos, set designs and conceptual art drawings. The site looks nice and... wait for it... it's not flash intensive! Lets Dance! Yea! Yes folks, the site loads fast since it's not all flash intensive so you can not only enjoy the content of The Mummy site but you can also enjoy the experience of visiting it.
Rob also lets us know that:
Starting May 27th I go to London to record Randy's score with the including traditional Chinese instruments, traditional Tibetan instruments, a choir, Buddhist monk chanters, and koto drum percussion.
That is awosme, I really like that they will go for a sound that will really enhance the movie experience.
Well, now I'm getting excited about The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor. Next I want to see a trailer which they are working on and soon we should hear about the debut of it.
The story of The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor: The ruthless Dragon Emperor (Jet Li) and his 10,000 warriors are double crossed by a sorceress (Michelle Yeoh). Trapped in suspended animation and forgotten for eons until Alex O'Connell (Luke Ford) gets tricked into awakening them. Alex then turns to the only people who knows a lot about stopping the undead: his father Rick O'Connell's (Brendan Fraser), mother Evelyn (Maria Bello) and Evelyn's brother Jonathan (John Hannah).
Rick must combat the resurrected Han Emperor to stop his quest for world domination. As they engage in a race from the catacombs of ancient china into the frigid Himalayas.
