After John McCain passed his bill outlawing torture, there was much rejoicing. The constitution seemed to be working, and coequal branches of government were checking and balancing each other. We finally took a stand against the Imperial president... Then King George struck back:
After approving the bill last Friday, Bush issued a ''signing statement” -- an official document in which a president lays out his interpretation of a new law -- declaring that he will view the interrogation limits in the context of his broader powers to protect national security. This means Bush believes he can waive the restrictions, the White House and legal specialists said (Boston Globe).
He What??? Congress passed a law against torture, and out Little King has decided he will enforce the law if he wants too!! No president should be allowed to do anything like this! His job is to enforce the law, not to make it! What is going on? Have we lost our soul as a country? Are we no longer a democrasy? We must work to stop this President from issuing more imperial power for himself.
