Project: Shadow

A gathering for speculative and entertainment purposes only.

OK guys, this is not one I have heard before. I did not know that people think that Twilight was a sort of rip off of The Vampire Diaries. Whoever thinks this either didn't read the books or is making some gross generalizations. I read The Vampire Diaries first but enjoyed them both. Yes, they are similar because they are both YA vampire books. Both of them have a teen girl who falls for a vampire guy in school. But that is where the similarities end. For those of you who have not read the books and don’t plan to, here is a short overview of the books.

The Vampire Diaries is about a high school girl who falls for a vampire guy. The vampire’s brother has a grunge against him from way back involving another girl that they fought over and attempts to steal his girl. He accomplishes it by making her a vamp, which turns the girl against the “good” vampire brother. In the end this book deals with vamps, ghosts, misty sort of mind bending and spooky "feelings". L.J. Smith is better at the plot and twists and spooky settings than Meyers.

Twilight is about a high school girl who falls for a vampire guy. He saves her from harm many times and then eventually his family accepts her as one of their own. It’s about how a passionate love can be so strong, they will do anything to be together. It involves vampires and werewolves. Meyers is better at the passionate love stuff than L.J.

The similarity between these books is like the similarity between any two romance novels. They both have vamps and love, so they are the same to the outside observer. I think the reason people are comparing them is because they are both YA vampire novels that have got some press. Considering the only YA-like novel that has been in the news for the last five years is Harry Potter, everyone is all a buzz.

Now, as far as the publicity and interviews go, someone really does need to tell Meyers to shut up. She’s kind of digging herself a deeper hole as she goes. I do kind of feel like L.J. is a true vamp/paranormal fan and Meyers is sort of a Lifetime network/primetime fan playing at vamps, but this is just my opinion.

thanks for clearing that up, I'm sorry for misspeaking on the two books we'll talk about that on Wednesday's show.

Oh, I didn't think you mis-spoke. I just had to give my 2 cents. You know how I am. I always have to play devils advocate. Hhehee.

I'm glad you did, It helped to clear up some misunderstandings I had...
That and I love the comparison of Meyers to "sort of a Lifetime network/primetime fan playing at vamps", ROFL

Yes. I still loved the books, but then again... I like some romance stuff. As long as it has a plot. Unfortunately us vamp fans have to grab at whatever we can (even the primetime crap) cause there's not much out there for us usually. She's opened it up a bit, but... you know what I mean. Kinda like Kindred: The Embraced wasn't as downright vampish as we'd like, but hey... it was a major network taking a stab (no pun intended) at vamps.

lol, yea I do understand

Meyers has obviously jumped on the band wagon here, L.J smith is the undeniable orginal and her books are far better and more interesting to read.

I totally agree. :) I haven't watched the Vampire Diaries tv-show. Was it really bad?

um its differnt to the books in a lot of ways but good as a tv show on its own - kind of like Legend of the seeker in relation to the sword of truth books

I was afraid of that. They looked very 90210/ Gossip Girl to me... But here's a question... I keep thinking that all of these teen books are dumbed down or "Disney-ized" because the movies are so bubble gum. But maybe... it's me? Is it because I'm an old fogie that I don't think they are good? is it what I imagine in my own head that is more mature than what they portray on screen? Oh god... AM I OLD!??? lmao.

I'm still not sold on either series. I'm very particular about my vampire stories.

lol - I think you probably not like them - they are very teenager!

Yeah, don't try them if you don't adore vamps so much you will give anything a chance. Plus, I think these books are a bit more girly than what guys can handle. If you do try one, go with the Vampire Diaries because they are much more spooky/mystery/action filled than the Twilights.
