Project: Shadow

A gathering for speculative and entertainment purposes only.

Many of my story ideas I know would work best as graphic novels or comic series. But I've always stuck to doing them as novels, and at one time. screenplays.

But a few weeks ago, I started reading Dave Gibbons huge coffee table book about creating the Watchmen. Then last week, an idea for a comic series popped into my head and I got the gumption to at least try to write a comic book. Then I'd either find somebody who would wound to draw it. And if not, draw it (ughh) myself. Then post it for downloading as well as make some via color copies and pass them around.

What I'm wondering if anyone here has written or drawn a comic book, or has thought about it. If so, share about it if you'd like.

Hehehe... Yes. I wrote this sort of SciFi teen romance kind of one and even drew the pics (way bad) when I was in HS. After reading some manga's, I got the stuff out and started drawing again... WILLING myself to be a good manga artist. Didn't quite work out too well. LMAO. But it was fun for a couple of days. OMG... Manga artists are amazing. To be able to draw the same charrie over and over and have them look the same from every angle. I just think it's great. I met an anime artist at a con last year. She drew an anime version of me in like 10 minutes. She does great work. Not that I look like this... but she got my main style and then made me prettier... which is always nice! :)

If we could find some artist, I could activate either dashPunkMedia.com or dashPunkBooks.com and start publishing the comics. I listen to Webcomics weekly and have been taking notes.

And I have seen your art and I like it. I am sure the comic looked good.

I once collaborated on a manga series that a friend of mine was writing. Basically his main villain was me, slimmed down, with some nifty techno toys. So every time it came to a part where he showed up either as his alter ego or his villain form Joey would consult with me. I'd work out something that I would do, but still fit in with the overall plot of his manga series. It was great fun working with him since he was studying to be a manga artist under his uncle who was a professional manga artist.

I would love to see it.

If I can get back in touch with Joey i'll see if he has a copy still that he could scan in for you. I haven't spoken with him since mid '06 or early '07.

I have been looking for an artist for years. I would love to publish a web comic, and later a graphic novel, but so far, I have not found an artist to work with.

Artists are a strange breed. I should know... being one I hang out with a lot. The main reason they are weird is because they operate on a different level. Most of them are flakes (sorry guys, but you know it's true). Most just want to do what they do and be loved because of it without actually trying to produce something that people like and will make actual cash-- thus the term "starving artist". An "artist" is usually late, unfocused, and self-involved. One of my artist friends likes to say, "The reason art is more valuable after the artist dies is because no one can stand being around the blighter." Don't get me wrong. There are MANY artists who are responsible and make money. These people are usually called graphic artists, animators, illustrators, or architects. Where was I going with this? Oh yes, you will meet many artists in your life. They can paint any trash object to look like a masterpiece, spew out gibberish about placement and lighting, and sketch out a pretty damn good picture on a cocktail napkin. But can they be trusted to collaborate with you? Well here’s a test:
Set up a powwow… a net meeting… a dinner date to talk about the project. If they show up late, nonchalant, and over-confident, RUN. If they don’t show at all and try to reschedule, RUN. If they show up either on time or early and eagerly sit on the edge of their seat or take notes, and offer to show you their portfolio…you know you have a keeper. Then you have to decide if their style and yours can mesh well. Obviously I haven't found the perfect collaborator yet. But that might be because I am the worst kind of artist... the overly anal, hyper perfectionist kind! Good Luck!

Dude! So totally unrelated to this post someone commented on my art work with this info that I thought you guys might find interesting:

Emz- your bedouin queen illustration is amazing.
there's a graphic~novel producing software for mac & pc called 'manga studio 3';
it retails for about us$30. combined with a scanner & compatible graphics tablet this could be a really nice outfit for creating comics; and we all want to see amazingly crafted eastern inspired gothic comics...

This is sooo funny to come upon! Good stuff.

I recently decided a story I've been plodding along with would really suit a graphic novel format, mainly because of the surreal aspects to the tale that I think could really be brought together by some terrific drawings. I have someone I write online with, and I really want to suggest the idea to them for us to work on something. We have great chemistry and it just really works.

I can recommend some terrific art to those who are interested in hiring someone. Please check out lucidprimate on deviantart. Amazing writer and drawer.

If anyone had any ideas they wanted to share, I'd be happy to listen/chat to you about them. I'm fairly opne to all sorts of ideas, all about getting the ideas out there.
